Flying With Children

Flying with children can seem like a daunting task. However, by following a few simple tips, your flying experience can turn out better then you expect.

Below are a few tips that might make flying with children more enjoyable:

  • Have a pre-flight chat with your children. Let them know what you expect from them and what they can expect during the flight. Be sure to explain to them appropriate behavior in the airport as well as on the airplane. Also explain to them the security procedures that they will need to go through.
  • Establish guidelines for emergencies. Make a list of emergency contacts and phone numbers including cell phones. Provide each child with a copy of this list that they can carry with them.
  • If they get lost, they should have the cell phone numbers for the adults that they are traveling with so they can be contacted. Instruct your children to stay in one place if they get lost, you will find them. They should not walk around looking for you. Carry a color photograph of each child.
  • Remind your children to not talk to strangers, do not ask strangers for help and do not go anywhere with a stranger.
  • Bring entertainment for your children. This can include books, magazines, toys and games. If they bring electronic games, the sound should be turned off or headphones should be used so as not to annoy people sitting close by. The internal network of Wi-Fi games should be disabled to comply with the FAA regulations.
  • If traveling internationally with only one parent, bring a notarized letter of permission or power of attorney from the other parent.
  • Write your child’s name on the inside of all their clothing.
  • Wait until everyone has left the airplane before you get off. This will allow you to gather your children and bags without holding everyone else up.
  • Sit with your children on the plane. If they are young, you should have the aisle seat so you can control your children.
  • Inform the travel agent that you will be traveling with children. Children under 15 are not allowed to sit in the emergency exit row.
  • If your children require any medication, the medication should be packed in your carry-on, not your checked luggage.

Remember these tips the next time you fly with your children. If you have any corrections or can think of additional tips, please leave a comment below.

I especially liked the fact that you instructed parent's to set clear expectations. I think half the battle of traveling with children is that they have no solid parameters on what is acceptable in each new situation. Yay for stress free travel for all.
